Aspire Trainer Kathryn to guest host on BBC Radio 1 This Christmas!

We are thrilled to announce that one of our very own Aspire Trainers has been selected to guest host on BBC Radio 1 this Christmas. Kathryn Wilson, who hails from the Ormeau Road, will bring her blest Belfast tones to Radio 1’s ‘Life Hacks’ and the Sunday Chart Show on December 29th, alongside Scotland’s Fat Brestovca.

30-year-old Kathryn started her career

in radio in Belfast when she volunteered with local station Blast106. Learning the ropes quickly, her passion for conversation and her creativity and charisma was quickly spotted by national broadcast players, Cool FM and Q Radio, where she clocked up over five years’ experience on both overnight shows and the prestigious Breakfast Slot.

The ambitious rising star of broadcast set her sights on mainstream media and moved to England two years ago. She now splits her time between England and Northern Ireland, working as a London club DJ and a multimedia presenter with her portfolio including stints on ITV’s acclaimed magazine morning show, This Morning, and regularly contributing to Radio Ulster.

Speaking on the news, Wilson, said: “I feel that this has been a long time coming for me so to finally announce that I will take to Radio 1’s airwaves this Christmas is both rewarding and motivating. We all know how hard it can be to break into mainstream media so it’s brilliant to know that media powerhouses are focusing on talent development and giving rising stars the opportunity to have tangible and worthwhile career experience.

“I am incredibly excited to take to the airwaves and share my talents, and my proud Belfast accent, with millions of people. I hope people in Northern Ireland will get behind me and tune in on December 29th.”

“I actually met Radio 1’s controller, Ben Cooper, back in 2013 when the station came over for the Big Weekend in Derry-Londonderry. I had previously participated in the BBC’s Academy so I brought my radio demo with me and made it my mission to meet Ben and give it to him - which I did! He told me I had a lot of work to do and he was right but now, six years later, it goes to show that listening to the experts, working hard and pushing for your dreams pays off.”
